Major Surya is on a rescue mission when he receives news that his father Krishnan has died. As he travels, his memories unfold: his father's own love story with his mother, his college years, the girl he met on a train and followed all the way to America, a devastating loss, a slide into drugs and despair, and the long road back with his father's quiet support. Suriya plays both father and son, ageing from teenager to old man, and underwent a famous physical transformation for the role. Director Gautham Menon described the film as partly inspired by his relationship with his own father. Harris Jayaraj's soundtrack, with songs like "Nenjukkul Peidhidum" and "Mundhinam", became one of the most loved Tamil albums of its decade, and the film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.
