Indrajeet comes from a wealthy, close-knit family; Pallavi is the cherished only sister of several fiercely protective brothers. They fall in love, and when their families' prejudices make marriage seem impossible, they consider running away, only to realise how much hurt that would cause. Instead they try to bring everyone round, while misunderstandings and tempers keep pushing things the other way. Doli Saja Ke Rakhna is Priyadarshan's Hindi remake of the Malayalam hit Aniyathipraavu (1997), and it was the Hindi debut of Jyothika, who went on to a major career in Tamil cinema. A. R. Rahman's soundtrack, including Kissa Hum Likhenge and the title song, is the film's best-loved element.
