Description

Tony, a suave stranger with a shady past, turns up in a Catholic fishing village on the Goan coast. He is secretly in the gold-smuggling racket and needs a cover; Maria, a spirited village girl, falls for his charm and is gradually pulled into his schemes, despite warnings from her family and her own conscience. Jaal ("the net") was Guru Dutt's second film as director, after Baazi, and again starred Dev Anand as a morally grey hero in the noir style the two friends pioneered in Hindi cinema. S. D. Burman's score includes Hemant Kumar's lilting "Yeh Raat Yeh Chandni Phir Kahan", one of the most loved songs of the decade, and the moody seaside photography by V. K. Murthy points ahead to his later work with Guru Dutt.
