Saravanan works as a cook in a catering team that moves from town to town feeding wedding guests, alongside a comic head cook played by Santhanam. On a job in Trichy he gets into a fight with a powerful local rowdy and his gang, and also falls for a spirited college girl, so his short stay becomes a running battle that soon puts both his crew and the girl in danger. Pattathu Yaanai ('the royal elephant') is a straightforward mass entertainer that mixes Vishal's action with Santhanam's comedy. It marked the screen debut of Aishwarya Arjun, daughter of action star Arjun Sarja.
