Kaniyan Poongundran is a moody genius of a detective, bored by the cases he is offered, until a schoolboy arrives with his piggy bank and asks him to find out who shot his dog. With his patient friend Mano, Kaniyan follows a trail of small clues to a chain of deaths that were made to look like accidents and a ruthless team of professional killers led by a man called Devil. Director Mysskin openly built the film as a Tamil take on Sherlock Holmes, with Kaniyan and Mano as a Holmes and Watson pair, and gave his hero the name of a Sangam-era Tamil poet. Its precise, chilly visual style, deliberate pacing and the cat-and-mouse games with Vinay Rai's villain made it a favourite with thriller fans, and a sequel was announced.
