Poove Unakkaga (1996)

Two families, one Hindu and one Christian, have been bitter enemies since a son of one eloped with a daughter of the other. Years later a young man arrives in their town claiming to be the couple's son, and with patience and good humour sets about healing the rift between the households, while hiding a secret of his own about why he really came and whom he loves. Poove Unakkaga ("this flower is for you") was the breakthrough hit of Vijay's career, enjoying a long theatrical run and changing him from a young hero into a family audience favourite. Vikraman's gentle, sentimental style and S. A. Rajkumar's songs made it one of the defining Tamil films of the 1990s.
