Aravindan comes from a well-off family but lives for his friend Chandru, an orphan whose loyalty to him knows no bounds. Together with their friend Krishnamoorthy they take on a painting job at a grand family house, where Aravindan falls in love, and a series of misunderstandings threaten to turn the closest of friends into enemies. Friends is the Tamil remake of director Siddique's own Malayalam hit of 1999, and it was a big success that cemented the young Vijay and Suriya as rising stars. Its comedy track featuring Vadivelu as Nesamani, the bumbling contractor, became legendary, and in 2019 a social media trend built around Nesamani made the film's jokes go viral all over again. Ilaiyaraaja composed the music.
