In a coal town in the north-east of England, the miners strike over a mine-owner's plan to dig into a seam they believe is flooded and deadly. Davey Fenwick, the clever son of the strike leader, wins a scholarship to university and dreams of entering Parliament to fight for the miners, but a hasty marriage to the vain, ambitious Jenny and the schemes of his old friend Joe pull him off course. Carol Reed's adaptation of A. J. Cronin's novel is one of the great British social dramas of its era, made with real documentary feeling for pit life. Michael Redgrave and Margaret Lockwood lead a strong cast, and the film's final mining-disaster sequence remains powerful.
