Harilal, the eldest son of Mohandas Gandhi, wants an education in England and a life of his own, but his father, whose public mission always comes first, refuses to grant him any privilege. Over the decades, from South Africa to India, the gap between them widens: Harilal drifts through failed businesses, debt and drink, while Kasturba is torn between husband and son. The film tells the story with restraint, presenting neither man as simply right or wrong. Director Feroz Abbas Khan had explored the same relationship on stage in his play Mahatma vs. Gandhi, and the film was produced by Anil Kapoor. Akshaye Khanna gives one of his finest performances as Harilal, Shefali Shah is quietly devastating as Kasturba, and Darshan Jariwala's Gandhi earned him a National Film Award.
