Puttanna wants nothing more than to direct films, and the film's title, which reads like a screen credit ("story, screenplay, direction: Puttanna"), is a playful nod to the great Kannada director Puttanna Kanagal. Comedian Komal Kumar plays the hopeful filmmaker, whose attempts to pitch and make his movie keep colliding with strange happenings and a mysterious woman played by Priyamani. The film mixes broad comedy with ghostly scares in the horror-comedy style that was popular across South Indian cinema in the mid-2010s, with P. Ravi Shankar adding menace. In Hindi it has been circulated under titles that play on other hit horror films.
