Kalyana Agathigal (1985)

Kalyana Agathigal ("those left out of marriage") is a 1985 Tamil social drama by K. Balachander, centred on a group of young women living in a hostel who, for reasons of poverty, dowry demands and family burdens, remain unmarried. Saritha, one of Balachander's favourite actresses, heads the cast. The film examines the dowry system and the pressures placed on single women with the director's typical blend of humour, sharp dialogue and strong female characters.
