Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017)

Keshav runs a bicycle shop in a village near Mathura and, at thirty-six, finally marries Jaya, an educated, forthright young woman. On her first morning in her new home she learns the women of the village relieve themselves in the fields before dawn, because Keshav's orthodox father will not allow a toilet in the house. Jaya refuses to accept it, and when she leaves, Keshav has to take on his father, the village elders, tradition and the local bureaucracy in a battle that becomes a social campaign. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha ("a love story") used comedy and romance to address open defecation, an issue the government's national sanitation campaign had put at the top of the agenda. It was one of the biggest hits of 2017, and Bhumi Pednekar's Jaya won wide praise.
