Jailor (1958)

The jailor of a prison is a strict but fair man, respected by the inmates and devoted to his work and his family. When his wife falls in love with another man and leaves him, the betrayal hardens him completely: he becomes suspicious, cruel and controlling, punishing the prisoners in his care and keeping a tight grip on everyone around him, including a young woman in his household. Only a long and painful reckoning can bring back the man he once was. Jailor was Sohrab Modi's remake of his own 1938 film of the same name, with Modi again playing the title role. Known for his commanding voice and his historical films such as Pukar and Jhansi Ki Rani, Modi was one of the great actor-producers of early Hindi cinema. The music is by Madan Mohan.
