Chinna Gounder is the much-loved young head of his village, the man people turn to for justice, whose rulings are respected by everyone except a jealous rival who wants him brought down. When a poor but spirited young woman crosses his path, a relationship that begins with friction grows into love, and the rival's plots begin to threaten both of them. Directed by R. V. Udayakumar, the film was one of Vijayakanth's biggest hits and a defining example of the Tamil village drama, with Goundamani and Senthil supplying the comedy. Ilaiyaraaja's songs, especially "Muthu Mani Maalai", were hugely popular, and the film was remade in Telugu as Chinna Rayudu with Venkatesh.
