Gupt (1997)

Sahil clashes with his stepfather, a powerful governor, over the woman he is to marry, and soon afterwards the governor is found stabbed to death. Every clue points to Sahil, and he is sent to prison. Convinced he has been framed, he breaks out and goes into hiding, helped by the girl he truly loves, while a dogged police inspector hunts him and anyone who knows something about the murder starts to die. Gupt is one of the best-remembered Hindi whodunits of the 1990s, from Rajiv Rai, director of Tridev and Mohra. Its twist was a sensation when it came out, Viju Shah's soundtrack with songs such as Duniya Haseenon Ka Mela and the title track was hugely popular, and the film was a major hit.
