Alam Ara (1973)

This Alam Ara is a 1973 remake directed by Nanubhai Vakil, a veteran of Bombay costume films, of the story first filmed by Ardeshir Irani in 1931 as India's first sound feature. That original is lost, so despite the claims of many uploads this is not the 1931 film. The story is a royal fantasy: a king's two queens, a jealous intrigue at court, a loyal commander wrongly punished, and his daughter Alam Ara, raised among wandering people, whose love for a prince eventually rights the old wrongs. Nanubhai Vakil had remade the story before, in 1956, and his version keeps the songs, palace scheming and romance of the old tale.
