Gunasingam is the long-awaited son born after five daughters, and he has grown into a proud, hard-working farmer who sees agriculture as the noblest work there is. His father Ranasingam's large family, with its sisters, their husbands and their grown daughters, all expect him to marry one of his nieces, and old grudges simmer beneath the festivities. When he falls for Kannukkiniyal, a strong-willed young woman from outside the family, the choice threatens to split the clan, while a local strongman nurses his own feud against them. Pandiraj's warm village drama is crowded with relatives, festivals, comedy and some rousing action, and pays tribute to farming and rural kinship. It was produced by Karthi's elder brother Suriya, who appears briefly at the start, and was a major hit; its Telugu version was released as Chinna Babu.
