Gauri has been orphaned and mistreated by the relatives who took her in, and when she is falsely accused of stealing, she is sent to an institution for destitute women. Angry at the whole world, she fights everyone and tries again and again to escape, until the home's kindly superintendent refuses to give up on her. Slowly, patience and trust begin to soften her, but her past keeps catching up. Nutan won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her fierce performance, one of the defining roles of her career, and Balraj Sahni is quietly moving as the warden. Shankar-Jaikishan's songs include the prayer "Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai", sung by Manna Dey, and "Suno Chhoti Si Gudiya Ki Lambi Kahani".
