Murali dreams of wearing the khaki uniform of the title, but after he is turned away, he seems to drift into crime and joins a powerful smuggling racket. In fact he has been recruited for a secret mission: to win the trust of the gang from the inside and bring down its leaders, even if it means being despised by the people who love him. The 1985 Tamil hit is a slick commercial entertainer with Kamal Haasan in action-hero mode, Sathyaraj as one of the villains in the period before he became a hero, and Ambika and Madhavi as the leading ladies. Ilaiyaraaja's songs, including Vaanile Thenila and Pattu Kannam, remain popular. The Telugu version is titled Kedi.
