When a run of misfortunes strikes a large joint family in a Chettinad village, the elders decide that their troubles began when they forgot a vow to their family deity, and that a rooster must now be sacrificed at the temple festival. Young Tamizhselvi, the grandfather's favourite grandchild, adores Pappa, the family rooster. Days before the festival the bird disappears, and while the adults search the village and squabble among themselves, the children have their own plans. Saivam ("vegetarianism") is a gentle, warm-hearted family film by A. L. Vijay, reuniting him with Sara Arjun, the child star of his Deiva Thirumagal. Its song "Azhagu" won Uthara Unnikrishnan the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer.
