Description

Khandaan ("family") is a 1942 Hindi film made at Dalsukh Pancholi's studio in Lahore, then a busy centre of Indian filmmaking. It is a romantic family drama, and it is remembered above all as the film in which Noor Jehan, previously a child singer and actress, appeared as an adult heroine. Its success made her one of the most popular singing stars in India, and Ghulam Haider's Punjabi-flavoured songs were a major hit. Pran, later famous for decades as Hindi cinema's best-known villain, plays the romantic lead. The director, Shaukat Hussain Rizvi, went on to marry Noor Jehan, and after Partition both moved to Pakistan, where she became its foremost singer. It is a landmark of pre-Partition Lahore cinema.
