Thirumalai runs a two-wheeler workshop and lives happily among friends in a working-class part of Chennai. He falls for a wealthy, sophisticated young woman, and refuses to give up even when her family objects. His defiance soon brings him face to face with a feared gangster, and a local rivalry grows into a full-scale battle in which the mechanic shows he cannot be intimidated. Thirumalai was a crucial film in Vijay's career, widely seen as the one that settled him into the mass-action hero image that later defined him, after years of romantic and family roles. Raghuvaran's cool, menacing villain, Jyothika's lively heroine and Vidyasagar's hit songs, including Thaam Thakka, helped make it a big success.
