Aditi has spent years as the dutiful wife of Shrikant, a successful, domineering businessman in Pune. When a lawyer arrives to say that her old music teacher, Malhar Kamat, has left his entire estate to her, Shrikant's suspicions are roused, and a long-buried episode from the days when he was often away is exposed. The question of who her son's father is tears the household apart and Aditi is put on trial by the men around her. Mahesh Manjrekar's Astitva, meaning identity or existence, was made in both Hindi and Marathi and is a sharp, dialogue-driven drama about a woman's right to a self beyond her marriage. Tabu's controlled, dignified performance is widely counted among her best.
