Raj Nartaki, "the court dancer", tells of a young prince of Manipur who falls in love with a dancer devoted to the temple, a love the court and its priests cannot accept. The story is a vehicle for the dance of Sadhona Bose, one of the great dancer-actresses of early Indian cinema, who performs in Manipuri style, while Prithviraj Kapoor brings his commanding presence to the royal court. Directed by her husband Modhu Bose, the film was made by Wadia Movietone in Hindi, Bengali and English versions; the English version, The Court Dancer, was an early attempt to reach audiences abroad. Timir Baran composed the music.
