Shakthi grows up hating the police: as a boy he saw his father, a constable, killed, and was taken in by Sivan, the feared boss of Madurai, who raised him like a son. Years later Sivan needs a man inside the force, so he makes Shakthi an inspector. Shakthi plays along at first, using the uniform for his foster father's ends, until a tragedy caused by Sivan's own world opens his eyes. He sets out to clean up the district, which puts him on a collision course with the man he loves most, while someone close to both of them is quietly working to destroy the family. Jilla is notable as the first film to pair Vijay with Malayalam star Mohanlal, whose easy authority as Sivan anchors the drama. It opened on the same Pongal day in January 2014 as Ajith's Veeram, one of the most talked-about box-office clashes of Tamil cinema that year.
