Description

Shankar grows up embittered, mistreated by an aunt who resents him, and finds his only friend in Kamla, the gentle girl he is raised with. Separated as children, they meet again as adults when Kamla becomes a companion in the grand house where Shankar now lives as master. Their love is stormy and real, but the house hides a secret that may make marriage impossible. Sangdil ("stone-hearted") is an Indian adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, recast as a tale of fate and family, and it pairs Dilip Kumar and Madhubala in one of their early films together. Composer Sajjad Hussain, known for his difficult temper and exquisite melodies, wrote one of his finest scores here, including Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar's duet "Dil mein sama gaye sajan".
