Janki and Lalita are sisters who would do anything for each other. Janki, the quiet elder, has always sacrificed for the family; Lalita is bubbly and spoilt. When Ram, a cheerful young man, comes into their lives, both fall for him without realising the other has too, and Janki makes a decision that will cost her dearly. Tohfa was one of the biggest hits of 1984 and the most successful of the Jeetendra films made in Madras by Telugu director K. Raghavendra Rao, a remake of his Telugu hit Devatha. It cemented the Sridevi and Jaya Prada pairing, and Bappi Lahiri's songs, especially "Tohfa Tohfa Laaya Laaya" with its rows of brass pots, became iconic.
