Captain Nolan, an Irish-Canadian fisherman, hopes to capture a killer whale to sell to an aquarium. His attempt goes badly wrong: he harpoons a pregnant female, and her mate watches as she dies. The surviving orca begins a campaign of revenge against Nolan's boat, his crew and the fishing village that shelters him, until Nolan feels he has no choice but to sail north and face the animal. Charlotte Rampling plays a marine biologist who tries to warn him, and Will Sampson a Native elder who understands the whale. Produced by Dino De Laurentiis in the wake of Jaws, Orca is darker and more melancholy than most creature films, helped by a haunting score by Ennio Morricone and location shooting in Newfoundland.
