Set in newly independent India, as Partition violence rages, the film follows police officers who suspect that a plot against Mahatma Gandhi is taking shape, and their struggle against indifference, politics and their own superiors to stop it. It presents the assassination as the outcome of a conspiracy and a failure of protection rather than one man's act. The Gandhi Murder is an English-language international co-production that mixes Indian actors such as Om Puri and Rajit Kapur with Hollywood names Stephen Lang and Vinnie Jones; it was among Om Puri's last films and was released after his death in 2017.
