Alex Pandian is a fearless police inspector who takes on Ekambaram, a powerful smuggler, and pays for it with his life. Years later, his two sons, separated from each other and raised in very different circumstances, have grown up: one is a police officer, the other a carefree small-time crook. Neither knows the full story of their father's death until fate brings both of them face to face with the man responsible. Rajinikanth plays all three roles, and his short but explosive turn as Alex Pandian became one of the most iconic police characters of his early career, with dialogue fans still quote. The film was a big success and helped cement his status as a mass hero. Rajinikanth later reprised the triple role in the Hindi remake John Jani Janardhan (1984).
