Balu is an easy-going young man who spends his days with friends and his beloved little sister. On the night of Diwali he sees Anu and is struck at once; when she later turns up in his neighbourhood, he becomes a regular part of her life but never manages to say the words. Their friendship deepens, a family tragedy and Anu's plans to go abroad add pressure, and the question of whether he will ever confess carries the film. Tholi Prema ("first love") made Pawan Kalyan a star, marked A. Karunakaran's debut as director, and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. It was remade in Hindi as Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai (2001).
