A proud father finds his sons have married women from many regions of India, each with her own language, food and customs, and his home becomes a noisy, quarrelling miniature of the country. The household's real test comes when the youngest son brings home a dark-skinned bride whose singing voice is extraordinary but whom the family is slow to accept. V. Shantaram used this comic family drama to plead for national unity and against prejudice of colour and language, only a few years after Independence. Sandhya, Shantaram's favourite lead actress, has a striking role, and the film's playful mix of regional characters and languages makes it an unusual social comedy of the 1950s.
