Senapathy fought the British in Subhas Chandra Bose's army; decades later, as an old man in Chennai, he finds the country he fought for strangled by everyday corruption. When a bribe costs lives, he begins killing corrupt officials with the ancient martial art of varmam, and a police officer is soon on the trail of the mysterious vigilante. Meanwhile his son Chandru, a cheerful fixer at the transport office, thrives on exactly the shortcuts his father despises, and the two stories are heading for a collision. Kamal Haasan plays both father and son, with prosthetic make-up overseen by Hollywood artist Michael Westmore. Indian was a huge hit, won Kamal Haasan the National Award for Best Actor, was India's entry for the Academy Awards, and was released in Hindi as Hindustani. A. R. Rahman's songs were chart-toppers, and a sequel, Indian 2, followed in 2024.
