Major Mahadevan commands a unit of soldiers posted in Kashmir. Among them is a young jawan from Tamil Nadu whose thoughts are never far from the family and the bride he left behind. The film follows the men through the routines and dangers of counter-insurgency work and builds to a tense operation against militants holding civilians, in which friendship and duty pull in painful directions. Kirtichakra was the debut of Major Ravi, a former army officer, and it introduced Mohanlal's Major Mahadevan, a character who returned in later films such as Kurukshetra. Shot partly in Kashmir with a focus on realistic military detail, it was released alongside a Tamil version, Aran, in which Jiiva's character takes more of the spotlight.
