Kalki is a modern, outspoken young woman who rejects the idea that women must suffer silently. When she sees how a self-centred man has humiliated and discarded his wife, she decides to teach him a lesson, entering his life in a daring plan that challenges ideas about marriage, motherhood and ownership. K. Balachander, the veteran director known for strong, unconventional heroines in films such as Aval Oru Thodar Kathai and Arangetram, made Kalki late in his career as a provocative women-centred drama, and it gave Shruti one of her most celebrated roles. Prakash Raj, then building his reputation in Tamil cinema, plays the husband, a part that brought him wide notice.
