Shivkar Talpade is the despair of his family in 1890s Bombay: he keeps failing his exams and has fallen for Sitara, a dancer the family will never accept. His life gains purpose when he meets Shastry, an eccentric scholar who believes ancient Sanskrit texts describe flying machines, and the two set out to build one, with the colonial authorities taking an unwelcome interest. Hawaizaada ("one born to fly") is a fictionalised account of Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, who is claimed to have flown an unmanned aircraft over Chowpatty in 1895, years before the Wright brothers, a claim historians dispute. Vibhu Puri's debut feature has a fanciful, storybook look, with elaborate period sets, and Ayushmann Khurrana sings in it as well as acting.
