Bhimrao Ambedkar is born into a caste considered untouchable, and from his school days faces cruel discrimination. Through sheer brilliance he studies at Columbia University and in London, then returns to India to fight for the rights of the oppressed, leading protests, debating fiercely with Gandhi over separate electorates, and finally chairing the committee that drafted the Constitution of independent India. Jabbar Patel's biopic, made in English with the support of the government of India and the government of Maharashtra, follows his public struggles alongside his private life with his wife Ramabai. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English, and Malayalam superstar Mammootty, in a striking transformation, won the National Award for Best Actor. It was later dubbed into Hindi and many other Indian languages.
