In a quiet Tamil village, a kindly old landlord is lent a vintage Premier Padmini and becomes devoted to it, as do the villagers who borrow it for weddings and errands. He cannot drive, so the job falls to Murugesan, a young man who has his own reasons for loving the car and dreads the day the old man learns to drive himself. Around this simple premise the film builds a warm picture of village life, an elderly couple's tender marriage and a shy young romance. Pannaiyarum Padminiyum was S. U. Arun Kumar's first feature, expanded from his own short film of the same name, and it was widely liked for its gentle humour, Justin Prabhakaran's songs and Jayaprakash's affectionate central performance. Vijay Sethupathi, then on the rise, plays the driver.
