Om Shastri has lost everything in the American recession and comes home to Uttar Pradesh hoping to sell his ancestral house. Local kidnappers, led by the hapless Bhaiji, grab him expecting a fat ransom, only to discover that their dollar-rich NRI is as broke as they are. What follows is a chain of comic deals as Om is passed up the ladder of ever-bigger gangsters, each hit by the slowdown and each convinced he is a prize catch. Subhash Kapoor's satire, set in the heartland and soaked in local flavour, became a word-of-mouth success and is remembered for Sanjay Mishra's comic timing. Kapoor went on to make Jolly LLB.
