Ram and his wife take their small son to the beach on his birthday, and in a moment of distraction the boy is gone. When the police make little progress, Ram sets out alone, following clue after clue from one city to the next and discovering a network that steals children and sells them into begging, labour and worse. The search becomes a grim journey across the country that changes him physically and mentally. 6 Candles was directed by V. Z. Durai, with dialogues by the novelist Jeyamohan, and Shaam's committed performance, including a gaunt, unkempt look for the later portions, was widely noted. The title refers to the boy's sixth birthday.
