Kashinath Ghanekar was a qualified dentist who could not stay away from the theatre. In the 1960s his role as Sambhaji in Raigadala Jevha Jag Yete, and later as the charming Lalya in Ashroonchi Zhali Phule, made him the most celebrated actor on the Marathi stage, the first to draw the kind of applause and fan frenzy usually reserved for film stars. The film follows his rise, his rivalries and friendships with figures such as Dr. Shriram Lagoo, his love life, and the arrogance, drinking and insecurity that came with fame. Subodh Bhave, who had already played Balgandharva and Lokmanya Tilak, gives a towering performance in the title role, and the film was a major Marathi hit of 2018, praised for recreating the golden age of Marathi theatre.
