Description

The last years of Mirza Ghalib in Delhi: the greatest Urdu poet of the nineteenth century, broke, drinking, patronised by a dying court, and in love with a courtesan who sings his ghazals. Bharat Bhushan plays Ghalib and Suraiya the courtesan, singing the ghazals herself. It won the very first National Film Award for Best Feature Film, in 1954, and Jawaharlal Nehru is said to have told Suraiya she had brought Ghalib to life. The upload it came from had its format details disguised by the uploader, which is a fact about that upload and not about the film.
