Preeti is a bright young woman whose life is shattered when she is sexually assaulted on her way home. Instead of supporting her, her stepmother and much of the world around her treat her as the one who has brought shame, and she is driven out of her home. Avinash, a cheerful, warm man who lives with his own lively family, finds her alone and gives her a place to stay, and slowly helps her rebuild her confidence and fight back. Their growing bond is complicated by Khushboo, a vivacious girl who has her own plans for Avinash. The film handles its serious subject within a family-entertainer frame, with Aishwarya Rai's role earning her a Filmfare Best Actress nomination and Anu Malik's songs popular at the time.
