Raju is a guileless wandering singer who helps a wounded old man and finds himself in the camp of a dacoit gang in the ravines of central India. The bandits take him in, the chief's daughter Kammo falls for him, and Raju, unshakeable in his innocence, begins to work on them with a radical idea: that they give up violence and return to society. His mission puts him in danger from the ruthless Raka, who has no intention of surrendering. Produced by Raj Kapoor and directed by his long-time cinematographer Radhu Karmakar, the film was inspired by real dacoit surrenders encouraged by Vinoba Bhave. It won the Filmfare award for best film, and Shankar–Jaikishan's songs, including Aa Ab Laut Chalen, Hothon Pe Sachai Rehti Hai and O Basanti Pawan Pagal, are classics.
