Mariyam lost her mother, who loved dance, and finds her own joy in Bharatanatyam, the classical form associated with Hindu temple traditions. Her father Salim, a tailor, supports her lessons, but a powerful local figure and many in their Muslim community see it as a betrayal of religion, and the pressure on the family grows from both sides of the divide. Mee Raqsam ("I dance") is a quiet, heartfelt Hindi drama, the directorial debut of cinematographer Baba Azmi, son of poet Kaifi Azmi. It was filmed in Mijwan, Kaifi Azmi's ancestral village in Azamgarh district, and was presented by Shabana Azmi as a tribute to her father.
