Captain Karanveer Dogra, an elite Indian Army commando, is captured after a helicopter crash across the border and held prisoner. Disowned and determined to get home, he escapes and ends up in a small town ruled by AK 74, a brutal gangster-politician who has decided to marry a young woman named Simrit whether she likes it or not. Karan becomes her protector, and the two flee through forests and villages with the gangster's men on their tail. The film launched Vidyut Jammwal as an action lead; a trained martial artist, he performed his own stunts without body doubles, and the fights became the selling point. It started a franchise, followed by Commando 2 (2017) and Commando 3 (2019).
