A once-wealthy merchant loses his fortune and, lost in a snowstorm, takes shelter in an enchanted castle, where he picks a single rose for his youngest daughter, Belle. The castle's master, a terrifying Beast, demands his life in return. Belle secretly goes in her father's place, and as she lives in the strange palace, her dreams reveal the Beast's past as a proud prince and the sin that brought the curse upon him. This French adaptation by Christophe Gans, the director of Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill, returns to the original 18th-century tale by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve and is notable for its lavish, painterly visuals, much of it created on sound stages at Germany's Babelsberg studios. Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel play the leads, and the production design was nominated for César Awards.
