Phantom of the Theatre (2016)

Shanghai, the 1930s. A young filmmaker returns from abroad and decides to shoot his new picture in an old theatre that has been closed since a terrible fire killed a troupe of performers years earlier. His leading lady is a rising star, and as filming begins, members of the crew die in strange accidents and the building seems to come alive with the past. As he investigates, he uncovers a hidden link between the tragedy and his own family. Phantom of the Theatre is a Chinese period horror romance directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Raymond Yip, who sets the ghost story among the glamour of old Shanghai's film world. Ruby Lin and Taiwanese actor Tony Yang play the lovers, and Simon Yam brings gravity to the older generation's secrets. It is more gothic romance than shocker, with handsome sets and costumes.
