Azhagu Sundaram is a gentle village youth who comes to Chennai in search of his mother, who has left home to look for work. Lost in the city, he is drawn into the underworld after a violent clash and, under the name Parattai, becomes a dreaded rowdy, all while the mother he is looking for lives close by, unaware of who he has become. The film is the Tamil remake of the Kannada blockbuster Jogi (2005). It was directed by Suresh Krishna, the maker of Rajinikanth's Baashha, and gave the young Dhanush one of his early mass roles, opposite Meera Jasmine, with Archana as the mother. Its heart is the mother-son story, which carries the film's strongest emotional moments.
