Ashfaque came from a small town and learned his art in a street theatre group run by Sidhu, a former dacoit turned activist. Renamed Sameer Khan, he has become a superstar, and success has made him arrogant and distant from his wife Sneha and his past. At a party he sees a young woman shot dead by the son of a powerful politician, and when he is pressured to keep quiet, his conscience and his old mentor push him to stand up. With Sidhu's troupe he takes to the streets, turning his fame into protest. Halla Bol drew on the Jessica Lal murder case and on the street-theatre movement associated with Safdar Hashmi. Pankaj Kapur's Sidhu was widely praised.
